500 years later

To commemorate one of the most important milestones in history, discovery of America, mass sailing race was held 1992.
Fleet of 150 sailing yachts from 26 nations followed C. Columbus route starting from Palos in Spain.
Croatia was represented with one sailing vessel type Elan 33 under comand of Tihomir Predovic (skipper), Jan Winkler (crew) and Hrvoje Perharic (crew).
First leg from Palos to Madeira (550 sm) was beated in 5 days and 2 hours.
Second leg from Madeira to Lanzarote (Canary Island) was indeed fast! 330 sm in 44 hours is an average speed of 7,5 kn. On this leg we reached top speed of 14,8 kn!
Third leg cross Atlantic, from Las Palmas to San Salvador in Bahamas, with distance of 3.300 sm took exactly 23 days. With searching for the wind we made 3.550 sm which makes average speed of 6,4 kn. We were 64 yacht to cross finish line but in corrected time cross Atlantic we finished 1st on our class and 5th overall.
Calculating the results from all 3 legs ELAN 33 "RUNAWAY - CROATIA" was 1st overall and 1st in hiss class of 16 yachts, ofcourse.
